Dental Cleanings and Oral Hygiene

Good oral hygiene is extremely important for a patient’s health. As a result, our dentists recommend that our patients schedule regular professional dental cleanings. Our dental cleanings include tartar removal, plaque removal, teeth polishing, and home care instructions.Whaling City Dental provides a friendly staff, a comfortable environment, and exceptional professional care.

What are Dental Cleanings?

Tartar and plaque builds up on teeth over time. If plaque and tartar are allowed to accumulate on teeth for an extended period, it can allow for dangerous bacteria to grow and flourish next to the gums. This can cause lasting damage to your oral health. A dental cleaning is the process of removing this harmful build up. The purpose of this is to leave the teeth’s surfaces smooth and clean in order to stop bacteria from developing. It is easier to maintain the health of your teeth and gums with home oral health care after getting a professional dental cleaning done.

Is a Dental Cleaning Right for You?

Dental cleanings are right for almost every patient. Dental cleanings are virtually painless and don’t cause discomfort in most of our patients. If you are apprehensive about getting a dental cleaning, please speak to one of our trained dentists and hygienists about your worries. Our staff is trained to help ease your concerns and provide a supportive environment to ensure that each patient receives the oral health care right for him or her. A dental cleaning has the following benefits for a patient:

  • Helps prevent gum disease.
  • Lowers the risk of strokes and heart attacks.
  • Leaves the teeth clean and smooth.

How is a Dental Cleaning Performed?

A dentist or a dental hygienist performs a dental cleaning by using several instruments that remove the tartar and plaque deposits on the teeth. An ultrasonic instrument uses vibrations to loosen larger pieces of tartar from the teeth. Water is used throughout the procedure to wash away any debris. After removal of the larger pieces, a set of finer hand tools are used to remove any remaining deposits on the teeth. Then, once the surface of the teeth have been smoothed, a polishing tool is used followed by an application of fluoride gel.
